Mission: review
My second week in PCR ends (almost) already. This week, the main annoyance came from worries network. Power cuts are a bit more episodic (one per play average), but they are devastating for the equipment (second hand) for e managed by the association. Thus, one of them has burned Wednesday HDD machine acting as a server, and e was found two days without Internet connection. Hard when you know it is their main activity (the other two being part of a photocopying and scanning documents, and other training Windows, Word, Excel and internet). The association would really need a UPS to prevent such failures ... FYI, this is the only cyber-profit, non-profit, therefore, the district Boulmiougou (100,000 inhabitants). He enjoys rates 3-4 times lower than those of private cyber, while remaining slight profit (expenses relate mainly electricity and salaries of two secretaries and guard).
Training of trainers was completed Friday. By early next week, it was for them to act! I'm still behind them to guide and counselor, because they are young (they return to class of 3rd, 2nd or 1st!), and have no experience. In particular, I was told that here it is particularly difficult for young people to assert its authority over to someone older, or that the situation they will face.
In detail, I have briefly formed Calc (similar to Excel: it was laborious, because they lack the necessary perspective to understand the benefits of this software) and Impress (equivalent of Powerpoint). Then, just to get them more involved, I asked them to reflect on the training they will deliver on all three software Writer, Calc and Impress, as follows:
1) individually, listing the concepts to be addressed, and in what order;
2) sharing and discussion (under my direction);
3 ) brainstorming to find a "common thread" to the local context;
4) creation of documents or drafts which rely on people following the training. They
reads a short text on Burkina Faso for training Writer (learners will copy the text and format it), Calc sheet prepared a simple budget treating their team handball, and wrote several drafts of complete texts on Ouagadougou for the slides during the formation Impress.
We'll see next week how it goes!

Bigest Bobes Wwe Divas
second week Family and Women
Among African specificities although present in Burkina Faso, in addition to the patience and hospitality of the people, there are two which are very surprising for a Westerner.
The first concerns the central place played by the family, broadly defined. I have already told how the Burkinabe all live under one roof within an extended family. We must understand that the links between family members are very strong, and we can not survive here alone. There is a hierarchy clear within a family: the patriarch has absolute power, in return he is responsible for the livelihood of the entire family. Following him, everyone obeys without question any older person and the same sex. I was quite surprised as it comes from how Mahamadi, who is head of family as the eldest son of the patriarch died, RBI bluntly to his younger brothers, and how they run without flinching, even when they are teenagers! But when one of his sisters was hit by a car, it Mahamadi who handled everything from coaching hospital, the complaint to the police, etc..
The second tradition, which is proving quite shocking to a Westerner, is fairly related to the first and concerns the place of women. Here we consider (including younger men, and quite a few women) that men's role is to bring money home to support family and that of women is to maintain the house and care for children. Thus, women prepare meals for men (it is rare that they do so, except when they live alone, for example when students are), eat with friends, but they eat separately. Men give really feel like being served by women when they return from work. Unlikely to see a man with housework or child rearing! Two other small illustrations of the image of women in Africa: a woman smoking a cigarette is considered a prostitute, and it is customary for a woman to marry before 24 years (27 for men but those that I know must have reached the limit without being married, although they are a couple). Another figure: in the sixth grade of a member of ACP (teacher of history and geography), the school year started with 10 pregnancies. The girls had 12 to 14 years. Men here are still very reluctant to see women occupying positions of responsibility, and consider the case when they are abusing their power over men.
In terms of relationships, after considerable discussion with members of the ACP that I frequent daily (all male), it appears that marriage, or at least have a relationship "official" serves primarily to preserve harmonious family relationships described above. The flirting and infidelity are part of African culture ", as I said a member of the association. Polygamy is theoretically banned in Burkina Faso, but until one time she remained admitted for Muslims and animists (cf. Mahamadi's uncle and his three wives, whom I mentioned last time). Many men are still considering the present.
Finally, I leave everyone free to judge these practices as they wish. I do note here that these cultural differences, and I think it is difficult to have an objective opinion without understanding the full context.
soon.

Response to Fabrice:
there are about 80 students per class, so logically forty girls (I do not think there is discrimination this level). If 10 were pregnant during the year, it's been a quarter of girls in the class! To abortion I do not know, but I do think that it is not practiced too expensive and for Catholics not consistent with what the Pope said. They will not all be dismissed, it depends if the father has or not. And if the father does not, there are also families comprehensive ...
But if the plan to open a training center for young unwed mothers wishes to heart Mahamadi and CPA is that the problem of rejection of these people are alive and well.

This hotel is probably most strange and unusual that is on earth.

The resort, currently under construction, will include a 400-bed hotel, a conference room for over a thousand people, restaurants and a multitude of sports and leisure infrastructure (swimming pool, climbing walls, jumping the elastic ...). Hotel Songjiang in itself will rise two stories above the cliff of 100 meters, on two levels and plunge under water or aquarium will house a giant!

Y'a no problem !
Hello,
to begin, I want to on my previous post about the environment in which I am immersed. While Burkina Faso is a poor country (172nd out of 174 in the Human Development Index), but in any case in Ouagadougou, it is not complete misery. As I said Salif, a member of ACP, an African proverb says: "If God does not love, it makes you born in Mali. If you hate it, it makes you born in Burkina Faso. And if really does not want you, it makes you born in Niger. " Here, unlike in Niger, therefore, it is not famine, although some families have to settle for one meal a day and it is poignant to see the kids in rags and barefoot in the street playing ball with a ball to the hoop or burst with an old tire moped.
I think my guests are part of the upper middle class: they all went to university, which after a ferry A1, which after a ferry G2 (but having the tank here is no picnic), have continued at least until the Masters, and many have stable employment office (accountant, college professor, ...). Mahamadi was the National School of Administration and Magistracy and is "advisor for economic affairs." He expects to know his assignment. However, I met a family of one of his uncles died today (2 of his 3 women and one of his son): these do not go to school, do not speak French (which is yet the country's official language) and are probably illiterate. They live much more difficult to clear, the two women, aged between 60 and 65, are well over 30. When we know that life expectancy here is 47 years, it situates ... Similarly, among all the kids in the family, the only one who is not afraid of the "White" and which is immediately came to me puzzled, is a nephew of Mahamadi 4 years old, Fadil. Fadil already understands and speaks fluent French. His cousins, however, older but who do not yet in school and only speak a few words of French (and again), however, are still intimidated by my presence, even a week after my arrival. It was quite sympathized with Fadil is an energetic and curious boy. He loved taking pictures with my digital camera, but it is no longer possible because it broke (it was a bit forced manually zoom) ... Accordingly, I am sorry but I can not put photos on this blog!
The culprit (the last photo is a self-portrait)
People here are very hospitable. They constantly ask me if I adapt well, if not too hot (it is over 40 ° C every day, rain is expected), so I support the local food ... I am sometimes shout at by kids in the street "Nassara!" Which means "White!" in the local language, MorĂ©, but it's still just to say hello and ask if perhaps I'm fine. Unlike other African countries, I do not feel that people expect gifts or trying to steal the whites. I was told that that would make it risked being lynched by others, too concerned the image of hospitality they provide.
Here we see a lot of people on the streets doing nothing, just wait. The wait is really part of local culture and people are in no hurry and have no strict schedule, they adapt. Example: when a power outage prevents computer training to start on time at the cyber, people are waiting quietly 1:30 the power comes back, sitting on chairs doing nothing. I think for a European support it, it must be in a holiday mood, and especially not trying to set too many constraints. Anyway with water shortages and electricity and the oppressive heat, which prevents making anything between 13:00 and 16:00, we are inevitably forced to adapt. As we say here at every turn: "there's no problem!". Another funny expression heard quite a few times: "(...) or good? " end of the sentence, as in Switzerland or to Grenoble ("you come with us, or else?").
To end on schedule, they are roughly as follows: wake up around 5:00 to the sound of the muezzin and roosters. Women and children began their day shortly after, while I royally granted me a lie until about 6:30 to 7:00. If electricity is there training cyber PCR 8:00 (Officially, in fact it starts earlier than 8:30, the time everyone arrives) at 12:30 or 13:00. Lunch and nap (for me especially, who have struggled with the heat - it's either for local or chatter nap) until 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., or return to the cyber discussion or another until about 20:00, lunch around 21:00, then discussion to the end of the night ... 23.00 for me, rather 1.00am to areas with very little sleep, 4-5 hours per night. But hey, apparently "there's no problem!
soon.

Mission: review first week
My first week in PCR was marked by cuts current, and of course the exceptional hospitality of its members, and Burkina Faso in general.
The section on training of trainers in office has been delayed, as 4 sessions took place while he will need at least 8. I offered to switch from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice, a proposal immediately accepted by Mahamadi, Chairman of CPA, but requires an introduction to instructors, who know only Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. These future trainers are 4 neighborhood youth, 17 to 19, who are doing a bit with a computer but not computer. They will have to form part of the local population that has never touched a computer keyboard or a mouse.
present and previous years, training is provided by a young and Mahamadi than twenty years, which is responsible for computer maintenance that manages cyber ACP. This training is conducted in 4 parts: discovery of the keyboard and the Windows environment, discovery of Microsoft Word, Excel, and introduction to web (create a mailbox, etc.).. These two people will no longer have time to provide such training, so they want the youth in question took over.
My program for the coming week is whether Sonabel (National Electricity Company) permitting, to finish forming the 4 youths in question on OpenOffice, talk to them about teaching and develop with them a training program tailored to local needs OpenOffice (the examples I have provided in their exercises are designed to Westerners!). The next step, from the weekend normally, will train members of the ACP web site design, and tell them about computer maintenance (Down with the virus! As I write this message, j 'I started Avast Antivirus on the PC which looks to me the most infested ...).

Response to Fabrice:
not UPS, but it became the top priority one for the internet! I do not know how the material is to hold, it will last perhaps not for long. The cuts are due to lack of rain, the two dams that supplies electricity Ouaga are dry, and there is no connection yet with neighboring countries to import (but it is expected, with the Coast d'Ivoire). According to the national electricity company, cuts are expected until late December! Normally a schedule of cuts per sector is fixed, but it is not respected.

Science Fair Paper Towel Project
Environment ouagalais
Hello!
In this new post I want to tell you a little radical change of scenery that I live in Ouagadougou. I'll start by describing the environment in which I find myself, I'll tell you another day habits, surprising for a Westerner, the Burkinabe.
Mahamadi I live with a home that looks like all those in the neighborhood (Pissy, in the 17th district, south-west of Ouagadougou). A "home" consists of several distinct blocks, without floor (except attic), around a courtyard. Each block has a couple or an adult member of the family (the African family is to be understood broadly: patriarch and his or her wife (s), their - many - son and their wives and children of these, Many also of course). In the yard going about in a free chickens, dogs and goats.
Mahamadi block is about 30 m ^ 2 and has one bedroom + living area (lounge has a small kitchenette with a simple gas stove and fridge - not connected ...). The bathroom consists of a single shower (no shower head hose, as in the locker room of sports!) With cold water only. But it's not a big problem given the climate :-) No furniture or sink. The toilets are in a cabin deep in the court: it is a simple hole, surrounded by a horde of flies and mosquitoes ...
Some houses have no running water, so I see every day people come to the water pump located next to the cyber to fill their water bottles. We had three days off of water until today at Mahamadi: shower bucket of water required! It reminds you of memories of Mary Central Asia?
Power cuts are frequent, as mentioned above: several hours every day in this period. But at least we have electricity, unlike other parts of the city! Neon lighting only, and no public lighting: it is pitch dark at 18:30. However, fans (who sometimes lurch dangerously ...) at all ceilings, and in at least Mahamadi nets to all windows.
More surprisingly, everyone has, and makes extensive use of a cellphone last generation, often containing two SIM cards! The iPod is also furious at the moment. I'll come back next time on television of Burkina Faso, among other things.
level infrastructure, only the main roads are paved (and sometimes very bumpy). Most are in the ground, where tan dust that flies continuously in the air ... like flies. Few cars, mostly to the huge 4x4 (bigger than those seen in France) with tinted windows, and old Mercedes. I have not checked if, as I said Francis, they all have at least 500,000 km on the clock! Almost everyone travels by bicycle or motorbike. Without a helmet, it's too hot! With this form of transport that members of the ACP transport me from one place to another. I also saw a few carts pulled by donkeys. People that carry bulky goods or put them on the rack their bikes, with a balance that is breathtaking, either on their head ... and in this case they run off!
soon for a small paragraph on the habits and customs of Burkina Faso.

Response to Fabrice: I brought
tablets to purify water, but they made me drink bottled water routinely (despite my complaints, because it costs them a lot). Hospitality Burkina Faso ...

People that carry bulky goods or put them on the rack their bikes, with a balance that is breathtaking, either on their head ... and in this case they run off!
soon for a small paragraph on the habits and customs of Burkina Faso.

tablets to purify water, but they made me drink bottled water routinely (despite my complaints, because it costs them a lot). Hospitality Burkina Faso ...

Cost Of Prepaid Sim Card In India
Start my mission
Hello everyone!
Here is a first live message from Ouagadougou. In fact I have written (on paper) this morning during a period of idleness this morning, cutting electricity required. Power cuts are frequent in Ouagadougou (several per day), and sometimes last several hours, as this morning. Suffice to say that it makes my training mission computer!
I arrived Saturday night and I was warmly greeted by several members of ACP. I hosted the first 15 days in Mahamadi, president of the association, and then I'll be staying with another member of the association named Thomas. Everybody is extraordinarily considerate with me, beyond the known hospitality of Burkina Faso, my luck is that Mahamadi and Thomas spent 15 days in France last spring, invited by an association named Toulouse Dunes leeward which ACP is a partner (it is this association that gave them the hardware they have) and has extremely good care of them. They want to give back to the French crossing :-)
Team ACP showed me his actions and his cyber [no coffee] Sunday, but I'm really back in the thick of the action yesterday, Monday, with the onset of computer training. And as expected, we had to adapt to the unexpected :-) I had prepared on my USB all the documents I needed, but the computers are infested cyber virus, which erased everything to me. So I spent the morning re-downloads of these papers (I had the presence of mind to put on a website ...), at dizzying speed 4 kb / s, and install OpenOffice on the machines. The first webcam was also installed, the others will be later, when the CPA has found a safe place for storage because there are apparently frequent flights in such places (even flying mouse! And not in weightlessness with CNES! [private joke for members of EVASION]). We finally decided to make a radical cleaning machines by formatting and reinstalling Windows (XP), but suddenly it took then reinstall OpenOffice ... The afternoon was held (with an hour late,
due to power failure ...) an introduction to computers for neighborhood residents, organized by ACP, in which 5 people (young: 15 to 25 years) were enrolled. In two hours it was really Basics: Exploring the Windows environment and keyboarding (final exercise: a small copy in Word text provided on paper - have at least 5 minutes per line ...). To some people who wanted to immediately extend the training and learning new things, Mahamadi said he should have practiced before going further, with which I agree completely. Following the formation therefore takes place in 3 days, with an introduction to Word. Meanwhile, these people can return to cyber when they wish to exercise. The training lasts a full ten hours, and also includes an introduction to Excel and Internet navigation. Tonight, another group of 4 people (young adults) follows this course.
soon in my next post I'll give you my first impressions of life in Burkina Faso, because I'm really immersed myself and we met a lot of people (who is home during their lives!). I will return later on my contribution to the training site: I have already convinced Mahamadi to abandon Microsoft Office and switch to OpenOffice
:-) PS: no pictures, too long to load!
